Are you in need of a criminal defense lawyer, but you are not exactly sure how to do this. Not to worry, we are here to help you with that. Here are some questions that you should be asking yourself when you are vetting these attorneys that could represent you in court.
Are They Responsive?
Being charged with something is stressful enough. You don't want to be constantly waiting for your criminal defense lawyer to get back to you about something, either on the phone or via email. You should be getting a response shortly after you send a question. You should also be able to set up a meeting with them within a day.
Do They Specialize in Criminal Law?
While some lawyers have a jack-of-all-trades office, you want to get one that has spent a lot of their career acting as a defense lawyer. That way, you know you are going to be getting someone who is on top of things and can give you the best defense in a courtroom.
Do They Know The Basics?
You want an experienced lawyer, not someone who acts like they just got out of law school and is constantly having to look even basic law facts up. If the one that you meet does that, then you should consider that a major red flag and look elsewhere.
Are They Experienced in Local Courts?
While you may see some ads from some big-name lawyers, they may not be that well-known in your local courts. You want a lawyer who has developed connections in the community and has built relationships in the area. They could also know the particular idiosyncrasies of a particular judge, which could go in your favor.
Do They Have a Good Reputation?
It's much easier to look up information about criminal defense lawyers on the internet these days. In the past, you had to rely on word of mouth. Check out sites that you know are reputable and read reviews that people leave for them. Trust your gut and go with the one that you feel the best about.
These are just some of the things that you want to keep in mind when you are preparing to hire a criminal defense lawyer. Hopefully, you will find someone who can give you the best representation in a court of law.
